Questions To Ask Seventh-day Adventists
1844
Adventism teaches that in 1844 the cleansing of the heavenly sanctuary began. When was it defiled?
Adventism
Why do Adventists want Christians to become Adventists?
Do you believe that Adventism has the truth, and that no one else does?
Do you think the SDA church is indispenable to God's salvation plan on earth in these last days?
Why was there no Seventh-Day Adventist religion before 1844?
Why was there no teaching of the "Investigative Judgment" before 1844? Why isn't this doctrine found in the Word of God?
What kind of religious organization needs to hide what it really teaches its members?
If Adventism is just another Protestant denomination, why the secrecy and doublespeak?
Why do Seventh-Day Adventists only recognize Ellen G. White as a prophetess? Do you mean to tell me that no other prophets have appeared in nearly 2,000 years?
Why did Jesus never tell us to look for another messenger or prophet? If what Seventh-day Adventists teach is true concerning Ellen G. White, then surely the Word of God would have foretold of the coming of such a great prophetess, who would reveal new doctrines. To the contrary, the Bible says nothing of the such.
If what Seventh-Day Adventists teach is true, then what about all those Christian people who died between the cross of Christ, and the beginning of the Investigative Judgment of 1844? If Christ needed to complete His work of redemption, then why would He wait until 1844?
Why did the White Party, suddenly feel a need to start a whole different religion?
If Ellen G. White was such an inspired prophetess, why didn't God give her the revelation of the year 1844? Why would God give it to William Miller, a Baptist preacher, instead?
Why do Adventists focus on highly symbolic and subjective apocalyptic writings rather than on such direct and powerful statements of Gospel as John 5:24, John 6:28-29, Romans 3:21-24 and Romans 4:4-8?
If the General Conference is the highest authority God has upon the earth, and Ellen’s authority is higher than the GC, then what does that make Ellen?
Do Seventh-day Adventists have direct access to Jesus Christ? If they do then why must they rely on a "lesser light" that points to a Greater Light?
Angels
Where in Scripture is the term "angel" ever used to describe any Person of the Godhead?
Apostasy
What is the Biblical definition of apostasy?
What is your definition of apostasy?
According to SDA doctrine, can a person still remain Christian (and saved) if they learn the SDA 'truth' and reject it?
Bible
Are you placing your perspective on the Bible?
What degree of assurance you have in the Scriptures themselves. If you believe in a "partially inspired Bible" then how can you teach others "thus saith the Lord"?
Body of Christ
Tell me about how you relate to Christians outside of Adventism?
Christ
Was Jesus fully God during the time He was on this earth?
So you are saying God in the flesh can be tempted though God without a body can't?
Could Jesus have sinned?
Did Jesus have a sinful heart?
Adventism teaches that the Lord Jesus Christ is also called Michael, the archangel in charge of the entire angelic host. Would it be ok to pray to Michael the archangel, since this is just another name for the Lord Jesus Christ?
Covenants
Abrahamic
According to the Bible what are the terms of the Abrahamic Covenant?
Who are the parties to the Abrahamic Covenant?
What are the sacrifices offered under the Abrahamic Covenant?
When does the Abrahamic Covenant begin and end?
Old
According to the Bible what what are the terms of the Old Covenant?
Who are the parties to the Old Covenant?
What are the sacrifices offered under the Old Covenant?
When does the Old Covenant begin and end?
Under what conditions are Gentiles held accountable under the Old Covenant?
Why did the Pharisees make this statement in John 7:49, "But this people who knoweth not the law are cursed", regarding the Gentiles?
How do you distinguish between the laws of the Old Testament and the Ten Commandments?
Are Christians obligated to any portion of the old covenant?
Why are the Ten Commandments still valid?
Why do Adventist observe the law only partially and neglect portions that they, by an arbitrary standard, have set aside?
Is the Old Testament Law a single complete unit that was fulfilled in Christ, or did He simply change pieces of it?
New
According to the Bible what what are the terms of the New Covenant?
Who are the parties to the New Covenant?
What are the sacrifices offered under the New Covenant?
When does the New Covenant begin and end?
What must happen for the Spirit of God to live in you?
How is one sealed with the Seventh-day Sabbath?
If the laws that God writes on the heart include the 4th commandment, why doesn't every Christian indwelt with the Holy Spirit "keep" it?
Old and New Covenants
Regarding the Old and New Covenants, which is better? Why? What is the difference?
What is the difference between the Levitical and the Melchizedekian priesthoods?
Which priesthood administered the Levitical laws?
Which priesthood administered the Melchizedekian laws?
What is the difference between the terms and conditions of the Levitical laws and the Melchizedekian laws?
Do you believe that if one remains under law that they they have fallen from grace?
2 Corinthians 3:14 (KJV) says, "But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ." What does this mean to you?
Where is Scriptural evidence that more than one covenant was given at Sinai?
Ten Commandments as God's eternal law
Do you yourself "keep" the law? Yes or No?
How could there be a commandment governing the relations of male and female before the beginning of human history? Sexuality does not belong to the nature of angels. How were these genderless beings governed with "Thou shalt not commit adultery"?
Since the Sabbath was made for man, how could there have been a Sabbath before the creation of the human race? The 4th commandment speaks of servants and beasts of burden, which do not belong to man's sinless state nor could it relate to angels in Heaven.
Who is the angels' Mother, so that they may honor her?
Why do Adventists insist on keeping about 130 of the
613 Old Testament laws
? Isn't this an admission that some jots and tittles have been changed--indicating that all has been accomplished?
Ten Commandments as God's "moral law"
Where is the Biblical evidence that everything in the ten commandments is moral?
Is all the rest of the Law excluding the Ten Commandments ceremonial? What about the law agains bestiality. Was that ceremonial too?
Death
God
Can God die?
What happened to the 'God' part of Jesus while the human part was dead?
Man
How does a Seventh-day Adventist make it to the resurrection?
How is Seventh-day Adventism's belief in death similar to an Atheist's?
Are there people with physical bodies in heaven right now? Then why couldn't Jesus do this with the thief on the cross?
Diet
Have you eaten any cheese in the last 12 months?
Have you eaten any eggs or egg products in the last 12 months?
Have you eaten any ice cream in the last 12 months?
Ellen White
Amalgamation of man and beast
What great sin do you believe is seen in certain races of men? Please be specific.
Infallible interpreter of Holy Scripture
Do you believe that Ellen White is the infallible interpreter of Holy Scripture for the Seventh-day Adventist denomination?
If you believe that she is a true prophet, then why can you not build your faith upon what she said?
What sign did Ellen White receive from God that she was genuine?
Why is it ok to use Ellen White as an infallible interpreter of God's other prophets, but it is not ok to use them as an infallible interpreter of her writings?
Can you show us one Biblical author who wrote erroneous information that they claimed came from God, only to later write a completely different view that they also claimed came from God?
William Miller
Did Ellen White state that William Miller was right in his 1843 message?
Did Ellen White state that those who rejected Miller’s 1843 message were working on the side of Satan and were rejected by God?
Did Ellen White state that William Miller’s 1843 chart was just as God wanted it, and that it should never be changed?
Did Ellen White state that God held his hand over the mistake in Miller’s 1843 chart, thus making God a partner in their deception?
Did Ellen White state that as soon as God removed his hand which covered the mistake in Miller’s 1843 chart, the Millerites discovered their error, thus corroborating the fact that she makes God at least partially responsible for their error?
Did Ellen White ever state that all the prophecies—probably Miller’s 15 proofs—which pointed to the 1843 date, afterwards correctly pointed to the 1844 date?
Did Ellen White say that when Christians repeated to the Millerites the words of Jesus in Mark 13:32, “no man knoweth the day and the hour,” they were manifesting the spirit of Satan?
Did Ellen White state that the 1844 message was a "saving message" and "a message from heaven?"
Did Ellen White state that pastors who rejected Miller’s erroneous message had "the blood of souls" upon them?
Did Ellen White state that churches who rejected Miller’s false 1844 message were "Babylon," and were apostate, "fallen" churches?
If William Miller used sound biblical principles, why did Adventism latch onto only a couple of his 1843 proofs?
Did Ellen White need William Miller's message to be a fulfillment of prophecy in order for the Adventist movement to be the remnant?
Did Ellen White view William Miller's message as:
The beginning of the first and second angel's messages?
The bitter experience spoken of in Revelation 10?
The warning message of the judgment, and the only tangible evidence that the world saw of anything happening on Oct. 22, 1844? In other words, was Miller the Adventist feast of trumpets for their day of atonement?
Did Ellen White need William Miller to give a heavenly message, even if it was dead wrong? Was this why they could not just say "we learned from our mistakes."? Their mistakes had to be intentionally done by God as part of the prophetic scheme. Their message pre-1843 had to be "prophesying" for them to "prophesy again." (Rev. 10:11)?
Isn't it true that to say that though Miller was wrong, and that his message, though having errors, was not the fulfillment of prophecy, and the warning message, would leave the Adventist movement with no tie to these prophecies, and no claim to the third angel's message? Therefore Revelation would not be speaking of them and they would not be the remnant?
Other
If Adventists are sincerely convicted that Ellen White is truly a prophet, then why is it most don't take her writings seriously?
Why do Adventists summarily reject any manifestations of the Biblical "gift of prophecy" occurring after 1915?
If Adventism indeed has the Light of the World, why does it need a "lesser light"?
Can you name me another "true prophet" of God that started out teaching error and "grew in understanding" to the point that they began teaching truth?
How many false prophecies make a false prophet?
How many true prophecies balance one false one?
Does this method work for other "prophets", as well, such as Mary Baker Eddy or Joseph Smith? If we can sift through their writings and find inspirational passages can they be considered true prophets?
Does the SDA church believe that the biblical "spirit of Prophecy" is currently present in any church except their own?
Where is your biblical support for denying the existence of the living "gift of prophecy" in the Seventh-day Adventist Church today, while maintaining that it existed solely within the SDA Church for a brief period starting in 1844 and ending 93 years ago?
End Times
What about a baby Adventist that is born just after the "close of probation"? Are they lost or saved? Will Adventism once again open the "shut door" just a crack to let these babies in like they did between 1844 and 1851?
Former Adventists
Do you think "former Adventists" are Christians?
Do you believe we are lying about why we left.
Do you believe that those who have set aside membership in the SDA denomination have "lost faith?"
Why do Seventh-day Adventists insist that rejection of Ellen White equates to a rejection of the Holy Spirit?
Is the faith lost in Ellen White considered to be a loss of faith in Jesus Christ?
Is "faith" tied to accepting the teachings of the SDA denomination?
God
What do you mean by "Godhead"?
Gospel
What do you consider to be the "Good News" of the Gospel of Christ?
How can it be "Good News", if you aren't sure you will make it?
How is it possible to make sure that you do make it?
How can the Gospel be compromised?
When we are able to eat of the fruit of the tree of life, will it be because of our obedience of the law of God, or will it be because of Christ's grace?
Has Mrs. White accurately presented the gospel when she claims that it is through obedience to the law of God (at least in part) that we can eat of the fruit of the tree of life?
Grace
What does grace mean?
Historical
How is it that the early Church fathers had no clear indication of who wrote the book of Hebrews, and yet Seventh-day Adventists know for certain that it was Paul?
Holy Spirit
If, as New Covenant Christians, we are each God's sanctuary and our hearts are the Most Holy place where the Holy Spirit dwells, then how exactly does the Adventist latter rain work?
If we are sealed with the Spirit, what are we sealed with?
Idolatry
Do you have any pictures in your house?
Investigative Judgment
Who all is present at the Investigative Judgment?
How will you know when the Investigative Judgment is done?
Has the Investigative Judgment gotten to the living yet?
Has your name come up in the Investigative Judgment yet?
How will you know when your name comes up in the Investigative Judgment?
Can a Seventh-day Adventist be judged in the Investigative Judgment while they are still alive?
How can you have assurance of salvation if you don't know if you have passed the Investigative Judgment?
What happens if you pass the Investigative Judgment, but then afterwards you sin again?
Does Seventh-day Adventist theology allow for a person's name to be reviewed multiple times in the Investigative Judgment.
If a Seventh-day Adventist has passed the Investigative Judgment, do they still need Jesus?
Is it possible that there are today those attending your Seventh-day Adventist church whose names have already been reviewed in the Investigative Judgment, and how would you know?
Seventh-day Adventism teaches that "In the last generation God gives the final demonstration that men can keep the law of God and that they can live without sinning", and that "Through the last generation of saints God stands fully vindicated." According to this belief, God is waiting on the Seventh-day Adventist Church to be vindicated to the universe. How close are we?
If Christ can't come until the Seventh-day Adventist Church vindicates Him, why isn't the promotion of the Investigative Judgment doctrine to mainstream Christianity a top priority for the Seventh-day Adventist Church?
If through the process of the Investigative Judgment, a perfect Seventh-day Adventist who can "live without sinning" is found who can vindicate God before the universe, is there still reason for it to continue?
If you have already failed in the Investigative Judgment, why should you be concerned about a Universal Sunday Law? You are already doomed anyway.
We are told in Desire of Ages, p. 786 that those who came forth from the grave at Christ’s resurrection were raised to everlasting life. How is it that they bypassed the Investigative Judgment that started in 1844?
Questions on Doctrine (QOD)
Do you still hold to the Seventh-day Adventist beliefs as set forth in the book Questions on Doctrine?
Why did the book Questions on Doctrine go out of print?
Perfection
Do Adventists believe it possible to attain sinless perfection?
In all the years of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, has there ever been anyone who has perfectly produced the character of Christ?
Why would you even need Christ when you're as good as He is?
Prophets
What do you see as being the Biblical test(s) of a prophet?
How do you test those who claim to be prophets to know if they are true or false?
How many falsehoods may a prophet proclaim and still be considered God's prophet?
Remnant
Are you willing to explain the Biblical basis for your faith as described in this section of your fundamental doctrine #13 (The Remnant and Its Mission)? "...This remnant announces the arrival of the judgment hour, proclaims salvation through Christ, and heralds the approach of His second advent. This proclamation is symbolized by the three angels of Revelation 14; it coincides with the work of judgment in heaven and results in a work of repentance and reform on earth. Every believer is called to have a personal part in this worldwide witness."
Do you believe that Rev 12:17 and Rev 19:10 tells us that God's remnant people will possess the living active gift of the Spirit of prophecy?
Sabbath
Bible
Where is the word "Sabbath" first mentioned in the Bible? What does it say?
Where is the word "Sabbath" last mentioned in the Bible? What does it say?
What was the last recorded instance of sabbath-keeping in the Bible?
I can tell that you are passionate about the fourth commandment of the Decalogue. Are you equally passionate about the other nine?
Is there even the slightest hint in the New Testament that the Sabbath was changed or abolished?
Covenant
Old
When did the fourth commandment go into effect?
New
If the Holy Spirit writes the Ten Commandments on people's hearts in the New Covenant, as Adventism teaches, then why do numerous Christians fail to have the fourth commandment written on their hearts?
Why does Hebrews 4:3 state that we have entered into His rest by our act of belief? Why is there no reference to a sabbath day observance in this entire passage?
Creation
What work was there for Adam and Eve to cease from in the Garden of Eden? According to Genesis 2:2, God is the One who rested "rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made." That was the next day after the six days of creation. Where is the Scripture that says Adam and Eve rested? What work would they have rested from?
Where is there any indication that God returned to the work of creation that He rested from?
Where is there any indication that Adam joined God in this rest, and from what did Adam rest in this short time he was alive?
Where in the Bible can you show me proof of a command given to Adam and Eve to keep the Sabbath?
Heaven
How will Sabbath be observed in heaven?
What will be used in heaven to determine when to observe the Sabbath?
Does the Sabbath begin and end with the presence of light? What will be the source of light?
Is Sabbath observed in heaven now?
Do the angel's observe the Sabbath?
Was Sabbath observed in heaven before the earth was created?
Jesus
Seventh-day Adventists claim that Jesus worshipped on the sabbath. Whom did He worship?
If the Sabbath is a continuing "moral requirement", why did Jesus (in Mark 2:23-28 and Luke 6:1-5) compare the making of the Sabbath and His lordship over it to the sacred purpose of the Shewbread (Bread of the Presence) that was clearly "ceremonial" in nature?
Keeping
Are you saved by keeping the Sabbath?
Can you be saved if you give up the Sabbath?
If you stopped keeping the Sabbath, would you be lost?
Do you keep the seventh-day Sabbath holy? How specifically do you keep it holy?
When it comes to the Sabbath, do you practice what you believe?
How can you call it a holy convocation when you aren't observing the convocation the way that it was commanded by God in the old covenant?
What are the Biblical rules for keeping the Sabbath?
Does God keep the Sabbath at the same time as His faithful?
What were the rules for keeping the Sabbath at creation?
Was it a sin to break the Sabbath before the fall? What about the other commandments? Why was the tree needed?
Could Adam or Eve have sinned by breaking the Sabbath before they ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil?
Would breaking the Sabbath have caused the same result as eating the fruit?
If I came to your church next Saturday, to persuade others that all you need is Jesus, would I be keeping the Sabbath?
What is the church discipline in your church for breaking the Sabbath?
Do you believe that when the sun sets on Friday evening and you begin keeping Sabbath, that God and the angels begin also to keep the same time, and thus the heavenly hosts and you folks on earth keep the same identical time together?
Why do Seventh-day Adventists invent their own definitions of "sabbath-keeping." How is that "honoring" God? How is that following His commands?
if you lie, steal, spiritually murder, lust, dishonor your parents, or break any of the other commandments, what makes you think that you will be saved by keeping the Sabbath?
Can you honestly say that you can keep every Sabbath holy without one sinful thought crossing your mind during that 24 hour period?
How will keeping the Sabbath save you when you are still guilty of breaking the other commandments -- even to this day?
Do you leave your place every Sabbath and drive to church? if so you are breaking the Sabbath according to God's command.
If the laws that God writes on the heart include the 4th commandment, why doesn't every Christian indwelt with the Holy Spirit "keep" it?
Paul
Where do the Scriptures say that Paul worshipped on the Sabbath?
What do Paul do on the Jewish Sabbath to "keep it holy" that was different than what he did every day of the week while "preaching Christ"?
Purpose
What does the Sabbath point forward to?
Must I keep the Sabbath in order to be saved?
Isaiah 66
Why should we consider Isaiah 66:23-24 a reference to "the new Jerusalem" when the context of Isaiah 66 takes place in the view of dead bodies? Doesn't the SDA reading of Isaiah 66 conflict with the Revelation 21:1-4 where it says, "I saw a new heaven and a new earth" and "There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away"?
Are you advocating that we should observe new moons?
Salvation
Pretend that I'm not a Christian. Tell me why I should be a Christian.
What makes us safe to "save"?
How do we go about getting God's forgiveness?
Are a believers sins forgiven, totally and forever?
Have you been born again?
Can one be born again, and still not have the assurance of salvation?
Do you have assurance that you are saved?
Have your sins have been blotted out?
When did God create the plan of redemption?
How much of our salvation is centered in the resurrection?
Do you know that today you have a relationship with Christ, or is it a relationship with a church?
Was salvation accomplished by what Jesus did already, or is it being accomplished right now by what Jesus is continuing to do?
Are there things that we can do to assist in our salvation, or has the work already been accomplished by Jesus and is now available to all through faith in Him?
When you go to bed at night, do you fall asleep knowing that if you die during your sleep, next you will be resurrected among the saved?
Is the only assurance of salvation in SDA theology to be living without any known or willfull sin in your life?
Can you say with certainty that you are saved? Can you say with certainty that you will remain saved until death, or Christ comes to take His Church to Heaven?
If you are still yielding to sin sometimes when you die, or when He returns, will you be saved or destroyed?
Adventism presents a continuum that begins with Jesus death and flows through to a 'fully sanctified' person. At what point in this continuum is the person 'right with God'?
If our salvation is based on change in our lives, how much change do we need to see in order to have assurance that we have been saved?
Is a believer lost and "unsaved" from the point at which he commits a sin and until the point at which he confesses and repents of that sin?
If a believer sins several times each day, is each day filled with a number of moments in which the believer has salvation and a number of moments in which the believer is lost?
If a believer lets out a curse word as he drives into a fatal car accident, will he be lost if he didn't have the chance to repent prior to death?
If a believer was drinking and was in a fatal car accident, will he be lost if he did not have the time to confess and repent?
Can a believer have assurance of salvation? If so, how?
Can a person be saved and remain in the SDA church? Yes or No.
Sanctuary
What kind of sins were judged and punished by the judicial system of Israel?
What kind of sins could be confessed at the sanctuary?
Satan
What sin did Satan commit?
Since Adventism teaches that it will be Satan who will eventually bear our sins, what was the point of Jesus' death on the cross?
Sin
Does the definition of what constitutes sin change over time?
Is it a sin for me to remain in a situation where I feel like I have to compromise my beliefs?
Do you know anybody that has stopped sinning?
Sunday
What day of the week did Pentecost occur?
When was the first recorded event in Scripture where it says that early Christians worshipped God on Sunday?
Worship
Does the Bible allow Christians to worship God on any day other than the 7th day?
When is it not a good time for worship with fellow believers?
In the Seventh-day Adventist Hymnal, hymn 403, Let Us Break Bread Together, each verse says "When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun". What does this mean?
